Nerikomi is a traditional Japanese technique in which patterns are created using differently colored clays instead of glazing or painting the surface. In this piece, I colored the clay with the same green pigment I use for my mar-green texture and combined it with my white clay I always use and created a grid pattern.
Each Medusa piece begins as a slab of clay, which I shape upside down allowing gravity to guide the form and develop the curves I am looking for. The process relies heavily on imagination and intuition, as I cannot fully see the final result until the piece has dried. Once the clay reaches the leather-hard stage, I am able to turn the piece upright and reveal the form that has developed. As a result, each Medusa is a unique piece with its own organic curves and character.
