Mar Azul Corales Finding Its Way Tall

This vase is made using the coil (churrito) technique, after which I smooth the surface and wait until it reaches the exact leather hard state I want (when it has dried slightly, but not too much) to apply my mar texture.

Once the mar texture has been carved, I begin making the corals, which are then added to the piece one by one.

The mar section is glazed with cobalt and clear glaze. The corals are the most tricky part for me in this piece, as I like them to have depth rather than a single flat color. Because of this, the piece goes through the kiln 3–4 times in total. I apply pigment to the corals for their first glaze firing, where the mar texture already reveals that deep blue tone. The coral, however, looks a bit "meh" at this stage (in my opinion), which is why I continue layering additional applications and firing it again.

I also like the form where the mar texture is to feel slightly irregular, because this is where the organic gesture of the piece becomes even more visible.
